Audited Supplier A tricone bit is a mechanical drill bit located in the bottom hole assembly. The bit cuts away the surface of the rock being drilled through rotation and mechanical friction caused by the teeth of the bit. Tricone bits are designed to take the energy of the rotating drill string and the supply of mud and to apply this force to deepen the well.
Every tricone bits have a IADC code,the IADC Code for Tricone Bits defines its bearing design and other design features ( SHIRT TAIL, LEG, SECTION, CUTTER).
IADC Codes make it easier for drillers to describe what kind of rock bit they are looking for.
These are paths for drilling fluid to pass through the drilling bits to carry the cuttings away from the bottom. The earliest bits were fitted with a hole in the center of the body, as wells become deeper; more hydraulic force was needed to carry the cuttings, jet nozzles were used to increase the hydraulic force. Nozzles can be in various sizes which can be changed to adjust the pressure and flow requirements of the operations.
The drilling bit has to be reinforced at its outer parts to resist against the impacts caused by the direct contacts with hole walls. Many methods can be used to protect the bit, one method is hard facing the bit with a tungsten carbide layer at the outer parts, also a series of tungsten carbide inserts can be pressed at the same parts concerned by the impacts and wears.
The way the tricone breaks through the rock is by using its multitude of very small chisel shapes, which protrude from a roller. These are pushed into the rock by the rods that connect it to the surface, and the weight is distributed evenly to break through.
